Did you know that there are seals in Greece?
Yes, you heard it right! Our SiFly team had the fortunate (or unfortunate) experience of encountering them twice while eFoiling.
The first time, two of our riders saw what appeared to be a grey man with black hair lying facedown in the water. They thought they had found a corpse and were about to call the police when they decided to get closer. To their surprise, they found a huge 2-meter seal, and while they were scared at first, they later laughed about the incident.
The second time, one of our riders was eFoiling around an island on Sithonia when he saw something massive pop out of the water just a few meters away from him. He quickly recognized it as a seal and went back to the shore to tell everyone about it. Although the fishermen on the beach laughed and thought he probably saw an otter, our colleague insisted that it was a 2-meter-long seal.
It turns out that seals are attracted to fisheries, which is why they venture near the shore. So, the next time you go eFoiling in Greece, keep in mind that you might encounter some unexpected wildlife.
The Aegean sea is home to one of the rarest species of seals, the Mediterranean monk seal, with only about 700 individuals left in the wild. This species of seal can grow up to an average of 2.4 meters as adults, with males weighing about 320 kilograms and females weighing 300 kilograms.
Isn't it thrilling to know that you might encounter such magnificent creatures while enjoying the beauty of Greece? We hope this has inspired you to explore more of what the Aegean sea has to offer.
